The Problem With Tonto (The Lone Ranger)

Lone Ranger

Disney has confirmed today that Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean) will direct the Lone Ranger reboot and that Johnny Depp has been signed. Is it as the title role? No, it’s as Tonto.

Tonto, in the Lone Ranger universe, is a native american who plays the role of a sidekick to the title character.

Here’s the thing: Johnny Depp isn’t exactly a native american. He says that his great grand-mother was cherokee, but that’s it. Disney seems to be afraid of casting non-caucasian actors in their title roles. Does Jake Gyllenhall look persian at all?

I can understand how trying to find a good native american actor and to sell a movie with an unknown in one of the main roles could be harder, but it’s not impossible. Actors can play different nationalities it’s true, but we’re talking about one of the most iconic native american roles ever created here. In the tv series, they hired a real native from the Six Nations Reservation in Ontario. Why can’t the same thing be done here?

If Donald Glover can’t play Spider-man because he’s “supposed to be white”, why is there a double standard when it comes to native americans?

Movie News : The American (next Clooney movie) trailer, New Disney Musicals, Tron’s new banner

Here’s the trailer for Anton Corbjin’s next movie : The American

Looks like a pretty standard movie for something directed by the great Anton Corbjin (Control). But then again, this is a trailer, so it could be a little bit less contrieved.

DISNEY’S NEXT BUNCH OF BROADWAY MUSICALS.

“To movie theaters…AND BEYOND!!”

Disney is trying real hard to create the next ‘Lion King’ or ‘Beauty and the Beast’ on Broadway. The problem is, sometimes the material isn’t exactly right for a musical (Tarzan comes to mind). They recently registered a bunch of new URLS for broadway projects (those in bold are “good ideas”) :

  • Aladdin
  • Alice in Wonderland
  • Calendar Girls
  • Citizen Ruth
  • Coyote Ugly
  • The Father of the Bride
  • The Flamingo Kid
  • Freaky Friday
  • Hunchback of Notre Dame
  • The Jungle Book
  • The Nightmare Before Christmas
  • Pirates of the Caribbean
  • Pollyana
  • Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion (WTF!!!)
  • Shakespeare in Love
  • Sister Act
  • Step Up (PLEASE NO)
  • Toy Story
  • Yellow Submarine

Oh and…Disney is thinking of riding on Love“s success with Yellow Submarine, or what?
