I live in Quebec and right now we’re in the middle of a social crisis. It’s important.

Things started with a simple protest: The students opposed the 75% raise of tuition fees. Now some could argue that Quebec tuition fees are not that expensive to begin with, but that’s not the issue.

The Prime Minister of Quebec, Jean Charest, refused to meet the students for weeks and weeks and things started to heat up. We’re now close to 100 days of protests and the government still refuses to listen to the students. Instead, they passed a new special law which doesn’t respect the constitutional rights of expression and association. Basically, the government can decide if you can protest or not…and you can’t be more than 50 at one spot.

I, as many of my friends, walked for democracy. Now celebrities are using their power to put the spotlight on this issue. Canadian filmmaker Xavier Dolan wore the red square on the red carpet at Cannes, “indie” Canadian band Arcade Fire wore red squares on SNL and now Michael Moore is talking about it.

Do your part and spread the word. Democracy is important.

Young director Xavier Dolan and the cast of his new movie, Laurence Anyways, are wearing the red square to protest against the much contested raise of education fees in the province of Quebec, despite the new law 78 created by the Prime Minister Jean Charest, which strictly forbids to protest in the streets or wear a red square in support of that cause. That law is considered by many to be anti-democratic and is generating a lot of heat in Canada.
Bravo Xavier Dolan et vive la démocratie!

  • Thomas J. Whitmore (Bill Pullman) : He dealt with an alien invasion and he fought for the survival of mankind.
  • Tom Beck (Morgan Freeman) : One of the first Afro-American presidents in the movie world. He had to deal with a minor disaster (a huge meteor that nearly destroyed the planet).
  • James Dale (Jack Nicholson) : He did nothing that extraordinary to stop Martians from invading the planet.
  • James Marshall (Harrison Ford) : Fights terrorists himself. Also, get off his plane.
For which movie President would you vote for?
